Origin and things worth knowing
Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) - sometimes also called "blue-green algae" - belongs to the genus of cyanobacteria and is one of the oldest life forms on earth.
This form is -unlike the freshwater alga "Chlorella"- bred in subtropical to tropical salt lakes in Australia, Central America, Africa or Southeast Asia or in special freshwater tanks.
In 1974, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared spirulina the "food of the future".
Spirulina has been used in Asia for centuries and the old Aztecs already knew about the strengthening effect.
Spirulina's specialty, however, is its ability to bind heavy metals and thus detoxify the body. Their high chlorophyll content contributes - similar to the related hemoglobin - to blood formation and blood purification.
Spirulina is also said to strengthen the immune system, regulate blood pressure and cholesterol levels and also have a positive effect on cardiovascular diseases.
Its property of satisfying or suppressing hunger can help with weight loss.
