Mastic resin was already known in ancient Egypt and was used there in the mummification of the dead and in incense mixtures.
In ancient times it was recommended for stomach problems, stomach ulcers, heartburn, inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes, periodontal disease and inflammation of the gums, pimples and acne, rheumatic complaints and wound treatment.
In modern times it is mentioned in pharmacopoeias as a tooth whitener and as an oral care product and is used in natural cosmetics in soaps, shower gels, face creams and toothpaste, among other things.
When used as an incense resin, it melts at around 105 degrees Celsius and gives off a pleasant fragrance that smells slightly of pistachios.
